RIDING THE MERRY-GO-ROUND

1970’s – 1980’s

Chapter 5

A Higher Education

Even before college began I questioned myself about needing to attend all four years of school when I knew I was going to work at Nathan’s. I had awaited the opportunity to work at Nathan’s full-time for my entire life. But my parents strongly advised me to go to college and get a liberal arts education and enjoy exposure to many different subjects.

College and Courtship

I took their advice to heart and landed at Ithaca College. During my years there, I ended up enjoying a variety of courses. I found many excellent teachers and learned a tremendous amount about myself, like what motivates me and other people, and how to live a positive life. Besides the academic benefit, I believe college should help people obtain a better understanding of their belief systems and core values, while exposing them to a variety of unique experiences, and enabling them to meet new people and form relationships that could last a lifetime. Just as Nathan’s offered customers a variety of foods to enjoy, college allowed me to sample plenty of different tastes and figure out what I actually loved to be involved with in the future.

But the best thing about college, and what changed my life the most, was meeting my future wife, Amy Thalheim. Professor Pat Pesoli-Bishop (my English professor) and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Bishop (Amy’s psychology professor), conspired to make that happen. I had enjoyed two or three courses with her when she invited me to her downtown off campus home for a cup of coffee and a chat during my sophomore year. It was not unusual for some students to get together at her home with her and her husband, whom I had met several times before. This was an informal way of exploring different perspectives on the class and on life in a more relaxed atmosphere. At the same time, Jeff invited Amy over, suggesting she come to the house to review her paper. Their real agenda was to introduce us to one another. Funny enough, they didn’t want to talk about school at all.

Amy and I started to date steadily the spring semester of my sophomore year and Amy’s freshman year. At the same time, I was thinking about leaving school and starting work. I was very interested in developing my relationship with Amy, but my desire to leave school in my junior year was greater at the time. I discussed with Amy my feelings about having to pursue a different course of action instead of continuing school. My parents and a few teachers with whom I had a close relationship sat down with me to brainstorm how I might start my Nathan’s career while continuing my path toward a college degree.

Since I could see graduation in sight, they strongly urged me to complete my degree. But
